Week of the Young Child
April 22-28,2012
Week of the Young Child is held each year to honor young children and thank teachers and all those who make a difference in young children's lives. The theme for WOYC is:
Bring Communities together for Children-Children Bring Communities Together
NAYEC and WECA encourage state and local affiliates, early childhood programs, and other organizations who work in early childhood to plan events that will bring your community together.
There are many different ways to celebrate Week of the Young Child. Some ideas may include the following:
* Raise public awareness by a letter to the editor of your local newspaper or a public service announcement on your local radio station. Sample letter's and PSA's may be found at www.nayec.org/woyc/faq. I am also happy to send you a sample via mail.
*Plan a thank you breakfast/lunch for the teachers. Ask parents and families to participate. Have children draw pictures and write notes to their teachers.
* Ask the mayor to issue a proclamation. Invite elected officials to kick off a WOYC event by reading the proclamation. You may also find a proclamation at www.naeyc.org.
* Involve families- host an open house, a game night, a reading night.
* Honor children's champions. Publicly acknowledge the contributions of community leaders and advocates during the event with a "Champion of Young Children Award."
Please feel free to contact me if I may be of assistance to you at happytoyou@vcn.com or 307-685-4306.
Also, let me know if your community already some fun ideas in place.
Be creative and have fun!
